Eight Refreshing Ways to Decorate for the Holidays
Decorating your home with holiday décor signals a special time of year. If you’re like me, you may have had the same decorations for years and years. If you’re looking for new inspiration for your holiday décor, consider some of these eight ideas below.
Go plush with plumes – Pampas grass is really trending right now and can be easily found at retailers such as Crate & Barrel It’s available in a variety of colors, including the more common off white, but is also in exciting colors such as pink, rust, mauve and even black. It’s a beautiful accessory that can be styled many ways and is a great alternative to plants or greenery. Its feathery texture creates soft visual surfaces and evokes coziness.
Add bows to your existing décor – Buy ribbon in a color or pattern that speaks to you and fasten bows to existing items in your space – anything from vases to knick-knacks, stair spindles to chandeliers – even the legs of dining or side tables. If tying bows feels a bit challenging, get a refresher by watching a YouTube tutorial. For larger bows, opt for ribbon that has hidden wire so it can hold its shape.
Ornaments off the tree – Ornaments have so much potential in places besides the tree. You can put a mix of large and small ornaments in clear vases (Ikea is a great resource for oversized, clear vases) and set them in eye-catching places in your home such as mantels, entry tables, buffets, and even the dining table itself. Besides vases, you can also use large platters or even shallow baskets to create an ornament-filled vignette. Hang ornaments on your existing houseplants or set larger ornaments on top of existing solid-colored vases. If you don’t want the hassle of an actual tree in your space (or for smaller spaces), opt for an ornament tree – these are usually metal and come in various sizes and shapes, and have hooks for hanging ornaments. An ornament tree can easily be placed in a variety of settings.
Extended use of greenery – holiday décor needn’t always be colorful to convey a festive atmosphere. Decorating with solid green garland can create a modern look that can extend well into the new year. Try an unexpected placement of greenery on the bars of the chandeliers and explore hanging green wreaths on interior windows. Ad a pop of color or texture by adding some ribbon or bows. Topiaries also make nice green additions to a space and have the advantage of being easily moved around and then planted outdoors in the spring. Again, adding a simple bow to either the stem or pot can give it pizzaz.
Wrapped boxes as décor – This idea is quite simple and is an easy and inexpensive way to create a festive atmosphere. Put those empty shipping boxes to use and adorn them with a paper of your choosing (even parchment paper with the right ribbon and bow can look lovely!) and arrange thoughtfully in vignettes.
Fruity accents – you’ve probably seen cranberries used as garland or accents. A fresher idea is using dried citrus slices. Use them for pops of color in green garland, string them together, or even fix onto a wreath – there are dozens of examples online for reference. They can even add sunny brightness as ornaments on holiday trees!
Cozy candles – Candles might seem like an obvious choice for holiday décor, but consider bringing their charm more centrally into your space by placing them in lantern boxes. To take it up a level, consider lantern boxes that have sides made of metal with a pattern cut out – in dim lighting, they will emit a beautiful patterned texture throughout the room. For safety reasons, I always recommend flameless candles.
(Faux) fur accents – Bringing in faux fur accent items is one of the easiest ways to give a space that “winter” feel. Throw pillows and blankets are two options. For blankets, drape them over a chair or the end of a sofa to create an invitation to coziness.
Pro tip: once you’ve finished your decorating (and while the house is still clean before the guests arrive), take photos of each area you’ve decorated so that next year, you’ll be able to install your décor even faster by duplicating what’s in the photos.
Remember, as lovely as poinsettias are, they are toxic to pets. Stick to faux or alternative options if you have pets in your home. I hope you found these eight ideas for holiday decorating inspiring. Make a cup of hot cocoa, turn on some festive music, and I wish you happy decorating!
